Who am I? Well let us start with the name – Yugandhar; Yug= era and thus the name translates to ‘A man known for the era’. Fancy, right. Next comes theprimary field of interest; I have always leaned to the academics' part of schoolingthanks to some wonderful teachers and parents as support. They let me delve into the world of learning without the pressure of results allowing me to sustain an attitude towards education that helps even today.
Then came leadership positions – vice-captain, and captain of my House in 9th and 10th standard respectively. 2 years I look back fondly upon as it allowed me to explore facets involving management and human interaction, aspects now placed alongside academics as a future I wish to work towards.
11th and 12thwere filled with preparations towards NEET. The choice itself was not hard, influenced positively by exposure to my father’s practice. I truly understood what it means to be an asset to the community when I observed him executing his profession in the build up to making a carrier decision. But the process was far from ideal with immaturity and COVID pile-driving learning. Realisation hit 6months out and I sat to learn and as terrifying that period was it was terrific too! Graced by some well wishers who allowed me to realise the true joy of really learning a subject. To be honest physics turned out to be my favourite:) Well, all of the above resulted in a NEET rank of 1575, making me eligible for BMC&RI, Karnataka’s top college. Yet this was ascarringevent. In the pursuit of academics, I had lost sight of character – a lack of which had resulted in subpar exam performance, and despite the good result it was my first taste of regret. As bitter as black coffee, the next 6 months were darkwith college admission being pushed back by judicial causes. It was at this time I sat across with my dad’s MBBS batchmate. This uncle had just returned from the UK and was now in a top position at a reputable hospital. One thing he conveyed which has stuck till now is ‘Don’t be boring, always have story to tell’. This kicked of a thought processwhich was carried into the first year of MBBS.
Rollercoaster ride is all I have to say about the first 2 years of the course. As lofted ambitions met the cold hard reality of a government college, it has sculpted for me an unconventional course where I have stuck true to my passion of academics – choosing for the sake of the process over the results it may yield. It would be arrogant to say all goes well, as this journey has been spotted with anxiety and fear but at the end of it all, I want to look back without regret. This brings us to the present.
As of writing this, I’m now a 3rd year medical student and will update this page as my course continues. Beyond academics, hobbies that allow me to express myself are poetry, writing and photography. In fact, this write-up itself has helped leagues in understanding and resolving a lot of thoughts. Poetry too holds a special place as it has been the culmination of many internal conflicts bearing fruit into productive thought processes. Now, it is my fortune to hold the position of co-editor at my college’s literature club!
Photography has been a close companion since long, as I still remember the afternoon we got a DSLR. An online course to understand the same has allowed me to capture frames to convey special stories in rather ordinary places to allow others to perceive the world I observe.
Last but not least is community service. It has been drilled by Amma and Appa that we mustn’t be a burden to the society we live in. I would like to think that I have stayed true to the same, having taken part in adolescent health programs and camps, menstrual health and awareness outreach in first year. As a member of the YRCU at BMCRI, we have also extensively performed breastfeeding and breast cancer awareness camps with blood donation and vaccination drives.
I was fortunate to teach few underprivileged kids science for 9th grade across the year. This also allowed me to further interests in teaching and education.
To round it off is research, my relationship with which is an article for another day;)
